535,912. Feeding webs. GOSS PRINTING PRESS CO., Ltd. Feb. 26, 1940, No. 3568. Convention date, April 21, 1939. [Class 100 (i)] A web roll w feeding a printing press is supported at one end by a bung or spindle 12 rotatably mounted in a cylindrical block 10 housed in a fixed support 6, which may be an arm of a three-armed spider for supporting three rolls, the block having three external helical grooves 23, 24, 25 engaged by corresponding pins 26 in a ring 32 fixed to the arm 6. A helical gear 37 slidably keyed to the block 10 and held against axial movement is engaged by a helical pinion 43 on a shaft 44 provided with an operating handle which carries a spring detent for engagement with a number of closely arranged holes or teeth on the arm 6. By this means a fine axial adjustment of the block 10 to adjust the pressure of the bung on the roll core 9, or a quick movement of the block to free the roll may be effected. The bung 12 may be mounted on ball bearings on a spindle 14 fixed in the block 10 by a screw 19 and plate 17 or may be mounted on roller bearings in an axial recess in the block. The opposite end of the roll core 9 is supported by a similar bung 12 and spindle 14 mounted in a block 67 secured to the opposite spider arm 6.
