[Class 4] An hydraulic jack for operating the undercarriages of aircraft is provided with a locking device comprising a piston valve actuated by the load on the jack and adapted to stop the flow through the conduits in the discharge direction as long as the load is on, or exceeds a pre-determined value. In the form shown the jack is extended by passing pressure fluid through a conduit 9 connecting the end of the working cylinder 1 by a groove 6 in a piston valve 3. When a predetermined resistance is encountered, the piston valve is moved inwardly against the action of a spring 17 into the position shown, and fluid for further extension of the jack passes through a non-return valve 12 in a byepass 10. The jack can be retracted only when the load upon it is relieved, for example when the weight of an aeroplane is removed from the undercarriage on taking-off. In some cases, the jack operates against tensile forces. In modifications, the piston valve passes into the working cylinder and is subjected to the pressure in the cylinder as well as to that of a spring.
