Abstract
535,611. Moulding plastic materials. BABER, W. M. C. Aug. 8, 1939, No. 22809. [Class 87 (ii)] Plastic materials, e.g. synthetic resins, are moulded by means adapted to be immersed in an hydraulic pressure-applying chamber, such means comprising a rigid mould member, a flexible member and sealing means adapted to render the mould cavity between the members fluid-tight, the arrangement being such that upon immersion in the chamber and admission of pressure fluid, the pressure is transmitted through the flexible member to mould the plastic against the rigid member which is supported by the hydraulic pressure. As shown in Fig. 1, a rigid mould member 1 is associated with a flexible member 5 the parts being of metal and sealed at the joint 7 by soldering or fusion. The mould is placed within a pressure chamber 25 to which pressure fluid is admitted through a pipe 26. Heat may also be applied. Fig. 3 shows a mould for an aeroplane spinner comprising interfitting rigid members 9, 10, the joint between which is sealed by a rubber sheath 12, and a rubber core member 14 shaped to fit over a neck portion 11 of the member 10. In further modifications a rubber core member is attached to a screwed part of the rigid member. The flexible member may be in the form of an envelope adapted to enclose the rigid member. The plastic material may be reinforced by fibre or metal and may be introduced into the mould cavity upon a temporary or permanent support.
