Abstract
Prestressed reinforced concrete pipes are formed by forming a concrete pipe containing reinforcement in a hollow resilient mould, applying pressure inside the pipe before the concrete hardens and then releasing the pressure and removing the pipe from the mould. As described the mould comprises a rigid casing 2 and a resilient moulding surface 1 preferably of reinforced glass fibre. End pieces 7, 6 contain holes 10 in which the reinforcement 8A is located the concrete pipe 8B being formed round the reinforcement by any suitable process such as rotational casting. A lining 11 impermeable to water is placed over the inner face of the concrete and a bulkhead assembly 12 comprising a tube 14 with ends 16 and 18 is inserted into the mould so that end 16 sealably abuts end 7. A further bulkhead 22 with attached rim 24 seals the other end of the water cavity (13) and is attached to end member 18 by bolt 19 and nut 27. Suitable sealing rings are supplied at each join to prevent leakage of water. Warm water (to speed the setting of the concrete) is supplied under pressure through pipe 30 and the pressure maintained until the concrete has set. The water pressure is released and the bulkhead assembly 12 and also rings 7 and 6 are removed. Steel discs 31, 32 fitted with rubber gaskets are then fitted, 31 to the right hand end of the pipe and 32 (which contains a water inlet) to the right hand end of rigid casing 2. Water pumped through disc 32 into the space between these discs forces the pipe out of the mould.
