[Class 40 (iii)] A multi-section ladder filter having given cut-off frequency or frequencies and given characteristic impedance can be designed so that, for a specified number of sections, the minimum attenuation in the stop range is the highest possible or, if the minimum attenuation in the stop range is specified, it can be designed to have the least possible number of sections. These problems are capable of rigid solution by means of known formulae which are given in the Specification (see, for example, H. Piloty in Elektrische Nachrichten-Technik, March, 1937). Such filters however comprise only m-type sections, and the invention consists in making one of the sections of constant-k configuration, thus saving one element at the expense of a trifling reduction of the minimum attenuation value referred to above. The Specification indicates the modifications of the formulae necessitated by the additional condition as applied to the design of low-pass, high-pass, band-pass and band-elimination filters. Simple examples are shown in which the m-sections are shunt-derived.
