535,116. Boring earth. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAMP GERB. STORK & CO'S FABRIEF VAN HIJSCHWERKTUIGEN. Nov. 28. 1939, No. 30971. Convention date, Nov. 29, 1938. [Class 85] Earth boring apparatus comprises a support 3, fitting on pins 5a carried by the rotary table 5, and housing an annular cage 6 for three spaced vertical rollers 7; upper and lower annular discs 8, 9 are connected by bolts 10 with central barrel-shaped portions 10a forming pivots for three spaced brackets 11 each carrying superposed rollers 12, 12a adapted to engage the drill pipe 13, the barrel-shaped portions allowing equalization of grip of the rollers 12, 12a. The free end of each bracket 11 has a cam 14 engaging a roller 7, while lugs 15 on the race 6 act through springs 17 on bolts 19 pivoted to the disc 8 whereby the cams 14 and rollers 7 force the rollers 12, 12a into engagement with the drill pipe 13 to communicate the drive from the rotary table 5; if, however, the resistance to the drill bit suddenly decreases and the released torque tends to cause the drill pipe 13 to overrun the rotary table 5, the brackets 11 move in advance of the rollers 7 and the driving grip is temporarily released.
