Bore-hole apparatus. - A machine for drilling wells &c. comprises a base 2 supporting a rotatable table which may be integral or in two connected parts 3, 4, .a bevel gear 15 rotatably mounted on the table and driven by a shalt 17, slidable members 19 whereby the table and gear 15 may be locked together, and slidable members 31 whereby the table may be locked to the base. An inner member 10 may be locked to the table by sedable members 11 and receives means sLidably engaging the drill rods to drive the latter or receives slips B to hold the rods while adding or removing rod sections; where large-diameter drill rods are used, the part 10 is removed and the driving means or slips B are placed in the part 9 of the table. When drilling, the part 10, the table and gear 15 are connected by the slidable members 11, 19 ; the slidable member 31 is released. When adding or removing rod sections, the table is locked to the base by the means 31, the slidable members 19 are released, posts E, D are fixed to the table and gear 15 to co-operate with tongs F, H secured to adjacent rod sections and the string of drill rods is suspended from the table by the slips B; the gear 15 is then rotated to connect or disconnect the adjacent rod sections G, C. Thrust collars 8, 39 prevent vertical movement of the parts. Inclined roller bearings 25 are provided between the table and the base and are supported in a recessed plate 26. Anti-friction rings 36,37 are provided between the table and gear 15. Lubricant channels 41, 42 convey lubricant from a reservoir 40. Interlocking annular tongues 43 prevent access of dirt &c.
