Abstract

534,955. Phase and frequency modulation. WEIGHTON, D., and PYE, Ltd. Dec. 22, 1939, No. 32760. [Class 40 (v)] A system of frequency or phase modulation comprises the first step of beating a master controlled oscillator A with an oscillator B which is frequency modulated by the signal. The resulting summation frequencies are passed through a phase-changing line or network D which gives a phase shift linearly proportional to the frequency, and the output is caused to beat again with the frequency-modulated wave from B. The difference frequency is selected and is passed as a phase-modulated wave, through frequency multipliers if desired, to the load. The phase-shifting network D may alternatively be connected between B and C, or between B and E. If suitable distortion is applied to the initial signal before its application to the frequencymodulated oscillator B, the output obtained from F may be a frequency-modulated wave.
