Abstract

534,503. Chlorinatedstarch. CORN PRODUCTS REFINING CO. Nov. 16, 1939, No. 30179. Convention date, Jan. 26. [Class 121] In chlorinating starch by the action of sodium hypochlorite, starch in a dry state is sprayed at intervals with hypochlorite solution while contained in a mixer fitted with agitating means, and provided with a cooling jacket to keep the starch below gelatinizing temperature. The starch becomes moist while remaining in the solid state and is afterwards dried to a moisture content of 15 to 20 per cent. Hypochlorite solution containing free sodium hydrate and available chlorine between 2 to 6 per cent. of the weight of the starch is used. The product is used for coating paper for lithographic printing, and gives an ink-resistant film.
