514,888. Effervescent magnesium hydroxide preparations. PAULEY, A. W. March 18, 1938, No. 8359. Convention date, March 20, 1937. [Class 81 (i)] A method of preparing magnesium hydroxidein a form which secures rapid dispersion and a uniform suspension of the greater part of any desired quantity of magnesium hydroxide in water, consists in compounding the magnesium hydroxide in a dry condition with an effervescent preparation composed of bicarbonate of soda with citric and/or tartaric acid, sufficient in amount to produce a brisk effervescence when added to water. The composition may be prepared as a powder or in tablet or other, e.g., granular, solid form. Oil of peppermint may be added as a flavouring, and gum acacia or gum tragacanth may be used as a binder when the composition is made up as an effervescent tablet. When the composition is added to water, the magnesium hydroxide remains substantially unchanged chemically, only a small portion going into solution and the major part remaining suspended. In an example, a granular product is prepared by mixing together magnesium hydroxide, tartaric acid and sodium bicarbonate, each of which has been dried, thereafter uniformly admixing uneffloresced crystals of citric acid, heating the mixture in thin layers at a temperature from 95‹C.-105‹C, until it becomes moist and acquires the consistency of dough, extruding this product through a sieve, and drying.
