[Class 122 (v)] An oil or other fluid seal to prevent oil, grease &c. from passing along a shaft secured to a flanged sleeve 6 with which co-operates a relatively rotatable race 5 is constructed with a smooth annular sealing face 7 on the race and an impervious flexible non- metallic annular diaphragm 10 bearing at a slight angle (5 degrees to 15 degrees) thereto to provide a substantial line contact with the sealing face, the diaphragm being yieldably supported by an annular spring member 11. The diaphragm 10 is protected by an annular member 12 of felt which excludes dirt, held in place by a further spring member 13. The impervious material is formed of a fibrous material impregnated with a composition insoluble in oil such as a phenolic condensation product preferably that known under the Registered Trade Mark "Formica." The outer bearing face may be fitted with a dirt-excluding annular member 15 offelt treatedwith a colloidal solution of graphite in carbon tetrachloride, and solvent dispersed asphalt, a securing spring 16 being used. The diaphragms 10 &c. are held in place by metal rings 17, 18, 19, and an outer retaining ring 21 secured by the flanges 22 of the sleeve 6. A lead packing ring 20 to secure an oil-tight joint is let into a recess in the ring 16. The spring members 11, 13, are preferably formed with notched -edges so that a series of spring fingers are formed at the periphery of each member.
