Abstract
534,232. Heating liquids by passage of current therethrough. ROWELL, C. V. Aug. 29, 1939, No. 24812. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, March 11, 1940]. [Class 39 (iii)] [Also in Group III] Liquids of a viscous nature, e.g. sugar juices, blood, gelatin, molasses &c. are concentrated by heating the liquid by an electric current passed between electrodes maintained in contact with the liquid while it is being centrifuged. Liquid through a pipe 51 on to a rotating disc 52 is flung against the walls of a rotating bowl 47 suspended on a hollow spindle 49 rotated by a pulley. The bowl 47 has an open bottom and is provided with helical electrodes 59 separated by insulating material 58 from the wall of the vessel. Current is supplied from brush rings 61 leading to terminals 60. The liquid flows down the electrodes 59 and then passes off through a conical bottom heated by a jacket 56. The rotating bowl 65, Fig. 4, is provided with stepped conductive sleeve rings 67, 68 arranged concentrically and in metallic contact with the bottom of the bowl, the inner faces of the bowl and the rings being provided with insulation 69 on which are mounted ring electrodes 76-82. Air may be admitted through holes 84. In Fig. 9 the bowl 95 is attached by slider 115 to spindle 96 and the electric heating element comprises a number of negative electrodes 119 attached to the bowl and meshing with positive electrodes 127 supported by a spider 123 keyed to the spindle 96. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts described (Figs. 1 and 2 (Cancelled) a centrifugal bowl 33 heated by steam or hot oil passed through an annular chamber formed between the bowl 33 and an outer chamber 27. Vapours pass off through a hollow pipe 29 through which the pressure on the chamber is regulated. The liquid may be fed by a pipe 34 to the bottom of the rotating vessel against a spreader plate 44 so that it flows upwardly over the helical grooves being finally ejected through a pipe 42. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
