Abstract

534,206. Type-printing telegraphs. CREED & CO., Ltd., and SALMON, R. D. May 30, 1939, No. 15919. [Class 40 (iii)] In a start-stop printing telegraph receiver of the kind in which a type-wheel is positioned by a rotatable member having a plurality of rows of stops co-operating with detents and placed successively in operative relation with the rows of stops, the detents are moved into their operative positions under the control of signal selecting members and angularly displaced cams, these cams being displaced by different angles so that the intervals between successive cams are in the ratio ¢, “, # &c. On receipt of a start impulse a cam sleeve on a shaft 1, Fig. 1, rotates and a cam 9 through a bell crank 6 causes a longitudinally slidable rod 5 to be aligned in succession with five selector members 7a...e. At the centre of each signal impulse and as the rod 5 is in alignment with each member 7a...e in turn, a five-lobed cam 3 tends to cause a hammer 4 to strike the rod 5 towards the members 7 but actual striking only occurs if by energization of the receiving magnet 13 the hammer 4 is so positioned as to be aligned with the rod 5. Thus each marking impulse causes the appropriate selecting member 7a...e to be tilted, the selected members being held by individual springs. At timed intervals, Fig. 3 (not shown) individual cams 11a...e causes raising of the appropriate members 7a...e and such of these as have been set, by striking one arm 14a...e of three-armed detents 22a...e, cause the setting of these detents to position the typewheel. At the end of a revolution of the cam sleeve, a further cam 11f returns the selecting members 7a...e to their original positions. In a modified construction, Fig. 2, a cam sleeve 32 causes the successive depression of T-members 30a...f into engagement with a common member 33 oscillated by the receiving armature so that these members 30a ... f are set in accordance with the received impulses. The T-members thus set are then raised by the cam sleeve 32 into engagement with the horizontal arms of three-armed detent levers 4b...d, 5b ... d which cause the setting of the type-wheel as in the other described embodiment. In both embodiments, the signal selecting members 7 and 31 have two movements during each cycle, the first being controlled jointly by the received signal impulses and by equallyspaced cam means, the second movement being effected later in the cycle under the control of cams displaced at different angles. Specifications 473,614 and 490,361, and 529,983, [Group XVI], are referred to.
