Abstract

600,297. Type-printing telegraphy. CREED & CO., Ltd., and SALMON, R. D. Oct. 23, 1945, No. 27898. [Class 40 (iii)] A signal selector and storage mechanism for a printing telegraph receiver comprises a number of storage members, one for each element of the code, which are set by a member of extent insufficient to coact with more than one storage member at a time, means for moving the setting member in one path by the response of the armature of a receiving electromagnet and means for reciprocating the setting member relatively to the armature in another path in respect of each code element of a received signal to effect a movement not dependent on the nature of said code element and means for selectively causing the lastmentioned movements of the setting member to set the storage members. A lever 4 mounted on a shaft 3 and rocked by the armature 2 of the electromagnet 1 supports a rod 34, Fig. 3, pivotally mounted on a rod 35 actuated by the projections of a cam 13 on a shaft 14. A pivoted latch 85 controlled by the rod 34 has a ledge 87 which engages above or below a projection 33 on the lever 4. Storage members 43 mounted in a frame 40 and traversed past the end of the rod 34 by a cam 39 are selectively actuated when the lever 4 is in its lower position. When the fifth member 43 has been set, a hole in the frame 40 is engaged by a pin 45 on one arm of a lever 46 actuated by a cam 48 on a shaft 31 so that the five storage members are simultaneously rocked to engage one or the other of five pairs of bell-cranks 49 with corresponding upward or downward movement of selector rods 52 to set a series of notched discs 53. During the return movement of the frame 40, a second arm of the lever 46 associated with another cam 48 rocks the shaft 41 carrying a member which resets the storage members 43. Start-stop arrangement. When the start impulse is received, an arm 5 on the lever 4 is moved to the right followed by a latch 6 pivoted on a lever 8 which rotates counterclockwise and rotates a lever pivoted at 19 so that its arm 16 is moved clear of a tooth 15 on a detent disc 12 carried by a shaft 14. During its motion, the latch 6 engages a fixed pin 23 and is moved clear of the end of the lever 5 so that the armature 2 and lever 4 can respond to the signal impulses. A tooth 24 on the disc 12 engages a lever 27 which releases a pivoted pawl 29 to clutch a cam sleeve 32 to a constantly rotating shaft 31. Shortly before the end of a revolution of the disc 12, a tooth 25 engages an arm 18 to bring the end of the arm 16 into position to engage the tooth 15 and at the same time rotates the lever 8 so that the latch 6 engages the end of the lever 5. If the lever 5 is in its right-hand position, the latch 6 is moved upwardly so that a recess 26 engages the end of the pin 23 and the lever 8 is prevented from moving downwards to release the disc 12 until the lever 5 has been moved to its stop position and the latch 6 restored to its normal position. The angular position of the three-armed lever may be adjusted by a member 20 in conjunction with a scale 21. Alternative construction. In a modification, Fig. 7, the shaft 3 rotated by the armature 2 carries a blade 56 which is rigid in its own plane and resilient in a perpendicular direction. The storage members 43 mounted in the frame 40 are traversed past the end of the member 56 and are sequentially set by the lever 35 and cam 13. Notched discs 53 are correspondingly set by sword-and-T members 61 carried bv a lever 58 and simultaneously rocked against the members 43 by a projection 37 on the cam 39. Specifications 228,842 and 245.149, [both in Class 40 (iii)], are referred to.
