Abstract
533,897. Friction clutches. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Dec. 13, 1939, No. 32117. Convention date, Jan. 12. [Class 80 (ii)] In a friction clutch in which a member 15 is faced with friction material, the latter, on the faces adjacent the member 15 is ribbed or corrugated, the valleys 69 of the material on one side registering with the ridges 71 of the material on the opposite side of the member 15, so that the latter Is flexed as shown in Fig. 5 when the clutch is engaged. When declutched the member 15 is plane. As shown, the member 15 is composed of a series of segmental plates 59 riveted to a plate 33 which is connected to a plate 37, by rivets 41. The latter pass through clearance holes 43 in a plate 29 fixed to a hub 25 splined to the driven shaft. The plate 29 has a bent-over edge 31. Relative circumferential motion between the parts 33, 37 and 29, 25 is resisted by springs 45 and by the friction at the points 31, 35, 39. The springs 45 are accommodated in holes 47, 49, 51 in the parts 33, 29, 37 respectively and are retained by lips 53.
