Abstract

533,794. Handling railway wagons. ROSS, W. Aug. 23, 1939, No. 24247. [Class 78 (iv)] A bogie carriage for handling railway wagons consists of a frame 10 carried on wheels 1 on a narrow gauge track 2 set between and at a lower level than the wagon track 3, the frame carrying an arm 4 having a forked end 22 that in the raised position of the arm engages an axle 56 of the wagon. The arm is raised by a lever 42 when a roller 39 thereon engages a ramp 40 the lever being retained by a catch 37 so that the arm 4 is held raised until it rides up on the axle, thus releasing the lever 42 which is spring-biassed to its free position. After moving the wagon, withdrawal of the forked end 22 from the axle allows the arm 4 to fall, its descent being steadied by a counterweight 5 moving in guides 19 and linked to the arm 4. The bogie carriage is operated by a winch and ropes 28 attached to a resiliently mounted draw bar 27. The forked end 22 of the arm 4 may be closed by a pivoted finger which is lowered at the end of the travel of the bogie by a second ramp.
