Abstract

533,381. Humidity measuring devices. NEGRETTI, H. N., NEGRETTI, P. E., and GREGORY, H. SPENCER-. Sept. 8, 1939, No. 25462. [Class 37] A humidity measuring device comprises hygroscopic material intimately incorporated in a piece of textile cellulosic material such as cotton fabric which is interposed between electrodes so that its resistance can be measured. A strip of muslin 1 is clamped at its ends in nickel gauge electrodes 2, 3 and is then boiled for about ten minutes in a 5 per cent. solution of calcium chloride, and dried in a horizontal position so that the hygroscopic substance is deposited uniformly. The strip is then mounted between end rings 4, 5 spaced apart by rods 6. The electrodes 2, 3 are connected to terminals 7 by connecting elements 8 welded to the electrodes. A spring 9 holds the muslin 1 taut. The whole is enclosed in a perforated cylindrical container which is either suspended or supported by a bracket in a room or other space where the humidity is to be determined. The container may have a conical nose so that it may be inserted into a body of material whose moisture content is to be determined. The resistance of the impregnated strip 1 may be measured by connecting it in an A.C. circuit in series with an ammeter. A D.C. measuring instrument responsive to changes in current in the A.C. circuit may be used, e.g. by employing a converter. Alternatively, the resistance constituted by the hygroscopic material may form one arm of a Wheatstone bridge, in which case a second arm may be formed by a similar hygroscopic resistance exposed to the same temperature conditions but not to variable humidity. According to the Provisional Specification, the strip of muslin may be replaced by a thread of cotton for use in restricted areas.
