Abstract

532,990. Cutting presses. STRONG. A. G. O., and GOLDING, W. F. Sept. 29, 1939, No. 26878. [Class 31 (i)] A cutting or punching press such as one wherein the sheet material is fed in from one end, the waste fed out at the other end and the cut out parts delivered to one side comprises pairs of feed rolls such as 1, 7 and 2, 8 the lower rolls of which are mounted in stationary frames 5, 6 and the upper rolls in brackets 11, 12 mounted on shafts 13, 14 free to rotate in the frames. The shafts 9, 10 of the upper rolls 7, 8 have pinions engaging pinions on the shafts 1.3, 14 and the shaft 13 has another pinion engaging a rack 23 reciprocted by a crank 24, shaft 14 being driven from shaft 13 by means of another rack. Brake blocks such as 16, Fig. 4, carried by the pivoted brackets are spring-pressed to engage the shafts 13, 14 so that upward movement of the rack 23 acts first to lift the brackets about their shafts to the Limit allowed by arms 26, 27 thereon contacting with stops 28, 29 and then to drive the feed rolls 7, 8 in reverse direction whilst out of contact with the material, downward movement of the rack causing the brackets 11, 12 to be lowered and the feed rolls 7, 8 then to be rotated to feed the material. ' Each pair of stop surfaces 28, 29 are diverging and adjustable relatively to the stop arms 26, 27 to adjust the lowering of the brackets according to the thickness of the material and the crank 24 is adjustable to vary the length of feed. The strip material is fed between adjustable side guides 40 on to a reciprocating push plate 32 against a back stop 34 and its front end on the next stroke of the push plate 32 is carried under check fingers 42, 43 but still clear of the feed rolls 1, 7. On the next stroke of the push plate the strip contacts a second back stop 33 and is then carried to exact position between the still open feed rolls ready to be fed forward thereby at the next down stroke of the rack.
