To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MA'rrHnw VIERENGEL, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Making Window-Envelop Blanks, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the present invention is to produce a simple and effective machine for economically producing window envelop blanks from which the window envelops can be made in any of the usual ways.
To this end the improved machine comprises endless conveyer belts for conveying successive sheets or partially prepared blanks into and out of operative relation to the cutting devices, which cut thewindow opening in the sheets or blanks, the pasting devices which apply paste to sheets gm blanks around the window opening, and to.
the patch applying devices which cut the window patch from an endless tape or web and impress it upon the pasted surface of the blank. A plurality of gage fingers is provided to intermittently move into and out of the path of the sheets or blanks to arrest them in position for the operation of the several devices referred to, one pair of sheet arresting gages being provided for each of said. cutting, pasting and patch applying devices. Allof the sheet arresting gage-s are operated in unison and have a common operating device, so that in the operation of the machine there will always be three sheets or blanks in different stages of formation. v
In order that the invention may be fully understood, I will first describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, and afterward point out the novelty more particularly in the annexed claims.
In said drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved window envelop blank forming machine. F ig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is an end view of the same, parts being broken away for the sake of clearness. Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse sectional view illustrating the cutting or stamping device. Any suitable frame work may be em ployed for properly supporting the operating parts of the improved machine. In the accompanying drawings I have shown a frame work consisting principally of the two main side frames 1 and 2 surmounted by four pairs ofuprights or standards 5, 6, 7 and 8. .Journaled in the standards 5 are the upper and lower feed rolls 10 and 11 into whichsheets or partially prepared blanks are fed, either by hand or by an automatic paper feeding machine. Passing around these feeding in rolls 10 and 11 are the upper and lower pairs of endless feed belts or tapes l5 and 16. The carrying portionsof the pairs of belts and 16 extend horizontally through the machine between the uprights or standards 5, 6, '7 and 8 and are designed to engage the sheets or blanks at their lateral edges and convey them successively into and out of position for the cutting, pasting and patch applying opera tions of the devices presently to be explained. Rigidly mounted upon the shaft 44 is an arm 48 carrying anti-friction roller 49 operating in engagementwith cam 50, carried upon the end of a transverse shaft 51.
It will be observed that "the cam 50 actuating the bell crank lever 43,46, 48, will reciprocate the bars 40.to move the age fingers 31 into and out of the path of t e sheets or blanks carried through the machine between the tapes 15 and 16. It will be understood that the gage fingers 31 andthe operating bell crank lever are made adjustable to suit different sizes and shapes of blanks and window openings.
Blanks passing from the feeding in rolls 10 and 11 are conveyed by the tapes 15 and 16 to a position between the standards 6, where they are arrested by the first pair of gage fingers 31. When the sheets orblanks are cut into the form of envelop blanks before feeding into the machine, I prefer to arrange the fingers 31 to engage the lateral notches in the leading edge of the blank. explained. is a transverse bar adjustably secured between the uprights or standards 6 by means of bolts 61 passing through the standards and engaging the slotted ends of the bar. The bar 60 is adjustable transversely of the machine and can readily be removed by taking out bolt 61 for the removal of the die or the insertion-of a die of different size or shape". This transverse bar 60 carries the hollow member 65 of the cut ting die, the bar having a vertical opening 66 through it to allow the upward passage of waste cut from the blanks. Pneumatic or other suitable means may be provided to take the waste away fromthe hollow die member.
.Mounted beneath the hollow die member 65 is the coiiperating male die member 70 mounted upon the vertically reciprocating cross bar 71, operatingin the vertical guide ways 72 formed on the inner faces of standards 6. This bar 71 has a downwardly presented frame or carrier 73 having antifriction rollers 74, operating upon cams 75 secured to the transverse shaft 76. The lower ends of the frame 73 carry a cross bar 77 upon which is journaled ananti-friction roll 78 operating upon central cam 79 also mounted upon the shaft 7 6. The cam 79 'moves the frame 73downwardly, and the cams 75 move the frame 73 upwardly.
When the sheet or blank arrives in position between the upper and lower cutters 65 and 70 the gage fingers 31 arrest the sheet or blank while the tapes 15 and 16 continue to move past the blank. When the blank is in positionv the lower movable die moves upwardly to out the window in the blank, and then returns to lowered position, after which the gage fingers 31 move out of the path of the blank and permit/the tapes 15 and 16 to carry it forward to a position beneath the paste applying devices.
When the sheet or blank reaches the pasting device, the second set of gage fingers 31 arrest its position and hold it against movement while a line of paste is applied to the face of the blank surrounding the window opening. The pasting device comprises a lower stationary rectangular bar 85 mounted between the uprights or standards 7 and an upper vertically reciprocating bar 86 mounted to move in the guide ways 87 of the uprights, and having pivoted to trunnions 88 at its ends the vertical itman 89 carrying in their lower ends anti-friction rollers 90 which operate upon the cams 91 secured to a transverse shaft 92 suitably journaled in the machine frame. pasting bar 86 is provided with a rubber pad 86 of the proper. size and shape to correspond with the size and shape of the window opening cut into the blank. Secured to the standards 7 on one side is a paste receptacle 100 inwhich operates a distributing roll 101. An adjustable scraper bar 102 is mounted upon the paste receptacle adjacent to the roll 101.

This frame 105 supports at its inner end a transverse shaft 110 which is journaled at its ends in the. frame 105 and carries a central pasting roll 111 which is designed to'be moved into contact with the fountain roll 101 to take therefrom a supply of paste and move beneath the pasting pad 86 of plunger 86 to apply a film of paste to said pad. The. frame 105 is reciprocated horizontally by means of two rock arms 115 which are fixed to and depend from the rock shaft 116 journaled in bracket plates 117 supported upon the standards 6 and 7. This rock shaft 116 has secured to one end a rock arm 118 to which is pivoted at 119'the vertical pitman 120 'formed with a slotted guide yoke 121 at its lower end, which straddles the shaft 76. It will be understood from the above desc'ription of the paste applying device that When the paste applying plunger 86 is raised as shown in Fig. 6, the frame 105 is moved rearwardly to cause the pasting roll 111 to travel over the face of the pasting pad 86. As the plunger 86 prepares to descend the frame 105 moves from beneath the plunger to again move the pasting roll 111 into peripheral contact with the foun tain roll 101; as shown in Fig. 7 of the drawings. As the plunger 86 approaches the plane'offeed of the blanks a blank is arrested by'fingers' 31 to hold it in proper registered position beneath the plunger, so that the paste applying pad 86 will be brought down into contact with the blank and apply paste thereto around the window cut into the blank.

The piston 140 (indicated by dotted lines in F ig. 3) of the suction pump 140 is connected by the piston rod 145 with the cross head 135, so that the downward movement of cross head 135 exhausts the air from the suction chamber 137 and enables the cross head to take hold of the strip or patch of paper for, conveying it to the previously pasted surface of the blank as will presently be explained.

The web of paper passes from the roll 150 to a pair of feed rolls 155, 156, which are journaled at suitable supports 157 secured between the standards 8. The shaft of the feed wheel 155 is extended at one end to support a ratchet wheel 160 which is fixed to the shaft, and, the gear wheel 161, which is freely journaled upon the shaf The gear wheel 161 carries a dog or pawl 162 which engages the ratchet wheel 160. A rack bar 165 is pivoted upon crank pin 165 upon gear 205 and extends'therefrom through a supporting guide bracket 166 by which it is held in mesh with the gear wheel 161. By rea son of the reciprocation of thetrack bar 165 the feed wheels 155 and'156 are given an intermittent feeding motion for feeding a section of the web from roll 150 into position to be taken by the patch applying plunger or cross head.
Adjacent to the feed rolls 155 and 156 is a transverse bar 170 to which is secured a cutter plate 171 over which the end of the web of paper is projected by the feeding rolls. Upon the inner side of the plunger or cross head 135 a knife blade- 175 is secured at its upper edge by screws 176, while adjusting screws or bolts 177 are threaded through the bar 135 and engage the blade 175 below its points of'attachment with the bar, so as to adjust the cutting edge --of the blade with reference to the cutter plate 171.
The blade 175 is arranged to co-iiperate with the cutting plate 171 to sever a piece of the web 150 between them simultaneously with the action of the plunger 135 in taking hold of the separated patch by suction. When the patch is severed and. held upon the plunger 135, the plunger continues downplying device) a so three sheets orfblanks ire successive stages wardly until the patch is pressed firmly against the pasted surface of the blank to cause the patch to cover the window opening of the blank. Immediately following the application of the patch to the blank, the suction in chamber. 137 is broken and the patch released by the upward movement of the plunger. The gage fingers beneath the patch applying device then move out of the way and conveyer tapes 15 and 16 carry the completed blank out of the machine between the delivery tape rollers 12 and 13. The blank can be received by any suitable mechanism such for instance as a receiving table provided with the usual jogging mechanism or the blanks can be passed to the printing press for printing, or to an envelop machine or any mechanism arranged to operate upon them.
The various operative parts of the machine above described may' be actuated in proper time relation by any suitable mechanism. -I have illustrated a driving shaft 200 suitably journaled in the machine frame and provided with a belt pulley 201 and a pinion 202, the latter of which meshes with the large gear 203 secured to the transverse shaft 7 6 beneath the window cutting device. This gear 203 meshes on one side with the gear 204 keyed to the shaft of the lower feeding in tape roller 11 by which the two rollers and tapes are partially driven.- The gear 203 also meshes with a large gear 205 upon. shaft 92 beneath the paste applying device, and this gear 205 meshes with and drives'a large gear 206, secured to the shaft 51 bcneath'the patch applying device. Gear 206 meshes with and drives the smaller gear 207 fixed .to the shaft of lower delivery tape roller 13 which assists in driving thc'endless tapes 15 and 16. In the operation of the' machine sheets or partially formed blanks are fed in any suitable manner to the feeding in tape rollers .10 and 11 and are carried through the machine by the conveyer fprmed of the two pairs of tapes 15 and 16. These tapes 15 and 16 engage the lateral wings or EOItlOIlS of thesheets or blanks above and elow to convey them through themachine,
and at each position beneath theblank opcrating devices (the window; cutting device,
the paste applying device and the patch apsheet or blank is engaged upon each side of its central longitudinal line and arrested-while the feed tapes or beltscontinually movevand slide over and under thearre'sted sheet or blank.- After the machine has received three successive sheets or blanks it will be understood that during its operation there will always be of formation in 'the'machine. The operating mechanism is so arranged that the window cutting dev1ce, the paste applying dedow is being cut 'vice and the patch applying device all operate simultaneously so that while the winin the last blank of the series, the preceding two sheets or blanks are having paste applied and a patch applied upon them, respectively. The sheet or blank arresting gages are all operated by the common mechanism to effect this result, the several pairs of sheet arresting fingers moving into sheet arresting position simultaneously and into inoperative position simultaneously.
