[Class 59] A crusher for pulverizing rock or like material comprises an outer annular stationary member with its axis vertical, an inner annular member arranged within and spaced apart from the outer member, and means for mounting the inner member for free rotation about a gyrating axis which intersects the axis of the outer member at a point below the crushing zone. The device comprises a vertical sleeve 7 having its upper portion shaped to form a spherical bearing surface 9, and a shaft 11 centred within the sleeve by bearings. The lower portion of the shaft rotates about a central vertical axis 15 while the upper portion of the shaft comprises a cylindrical portion 18 the central axis of which, 19, is inclined to the axis 15 and intersects it at a point 20 which is the centre of curvature of the surface 9. The inner annular member 21 comprises a crushing-head 24 secured to a liner 22 which rotates about the part 18 of the shaft 11 and has a spherical surface 26 which seats on the surface 9 Thus the head 24 is free to rotate relatively to the shaft 11 about the axes 19, and rotation of the shaft causes the head to gyrate about the point 20. The outer annular member A comprises a conical mantle . 62 secured to a carrier 63 which is mounted on the frame of the device coaxial with the axis 15. The member has a screwed outer surface 66 by means of which the distance between it and the member 21 can be adjusted. The upper part of the carrier forms a hopper 89 for the reception of the material which is crushed by passing through the space B between the mantle 62 and the gyrating head 24. The member A may be secured to the frame by bolts 73 surrounded by springs 74 to allow the mantle to move relatively to the frame when non- crushable material enters the space B. The mantle assembly may also be hinged to the frame to allow it to be swung to one side for cleaning or other purposes. The bearings and bearing surfaces 9, 10 are lubricated by oil circulated by a pump. In a modified construction, the crusher head 24 is supported by a shaft which is journalled in an inclined bore of a bushing that is rotated by the drive.
