Abstract

531,688. Glass manufacture. PHILIPS LAMPS, Ltd. July 1, 1939, No. 19222. Convention date, July 4, 1938. [Class 56] [Also in Group XXXVI] In the sealing of an article consisting of tungsten, especially tungsten wire, into glass having a content of alkaline oxide exceeding 1 per cent., the tungsten, during the sealing operation, is raised to such a temperature e.g. 1800‹C that the sealed-in object has a clean surface. The glass used preferably has a softening temperature exceeding 550‹C and an alumina content of 15-21 per cent. In an example, the glass contains 50 per cent. SiO 2 , 21 of B 2 O 3 , 16 of Al 2 O 3 , 3 of MgO, 2 of ZnO, 3 of CaO, 2 of BaO and 3 of Na 2 O. The glass is applied in a soft condition to the tungsten object e.g. with the aid of a rod which is made of the glass referred to, one end of which is heated in the proximity of the tungsten surface.
