Abstract
531,280. Actuating valves. WILCOLATOR CO. July 15, 1939, No. 20657. Convention date, July 15, 1938. [Class 135] [Also in Group XIII] The volume changes of a liquid 21 responsive to, e.g. temperature changes are transmitted to a compressible solid 15 such as rubber which fills a casing 10 and extends into a cylindrical portion containing a piston 13 the movements of which may actuate a valve. Under pressure, the solid 15 is distorted and forced further into the cylinder. The rear end of the solid 15 may be protected by a substance such as glycerine which is immiscible with the liquid. A bimetallic disc 17 may seal the casing 10 so as to compensate for temperature changes around the casing. In modifications, the piston 13 may project into a recess in the solid 15 which closes the end of a single receptacle containing the liquid. In Fig. 8, the compressible body is in the form of a cup 61, the cylindrical wall of which is subject to tension when the fluid expands. The liquid may be chlorinated diphenol. The piston 13 may actuate a valve, switch or the like. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes also a modification in which the cup 72, Fig. 9 (Cancelled), is inverted so as to be compressed by the liquid. A coil spring 72<SP>1</SP> may be embedded in it. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
