Abstract

530,677. Projectiles; sound-reproducers. JACKSON, L. MELLERSH-. (Commercial Ingredients Corporation). Dec. 13, 1938, No. 36342. [Class 9 (i)] [Also in Group XXXVIII] A projectile is provided with means for generating gas or with a reservoir of gas, means for causing generation or release of said gas at a predetermined time or upon impact of the projectile, and for expelling it at a high velocity through ports in the projectile casing, and means for varying the velocity cf the escaping gas to cause it to emit sound of a desired character. In the form shown in Fig. 1, a shell has a filling of a powder 5 adapted to be fired at the point 6 by a flame projected along a tube 7 from an explosive material 8 when struck by a firing pin 9. On impact with the ground, the fuze 3 is forced into the end of an outer casing 12 which is thereby splayed out to prevent undue penetration of the projectile into the earth. As the powder burns, the combustion products pass out through passages 25 to operate a siren comprising stationary blades 26 and movable blades 28 forming part of a rotor 27. The powder is packed in sections having different rates of burning and may produce noxious or toxic gases to prevent approach to the projectile while the siren is operating. In a modification the projectile is adapted to be released from an aircraft and is provided with stabilizing blades and with a parachute to slow up the projectile before impact with the ground. Fig. 4 shows a form of aerial bomb provided with a parachute. The withdrawal of a pin 64 allows the release of the parachute and opens a valve 66 through which compressed air from a chamber A passes into a Venturi 53, past a controllable gate 54 and out through orifices 55. The gate is controlled by a stylus 56 resting on a serrated band 58 operated by a motor 59 which is switched on when the pin 64 is withdrawn. The gate comprises a plate with slits vibrated into and out of register with corresponding slits in a plate 63 to produce articulate sounds according to the form of the serrations on the band.
