Abstract
530,643. Tanning. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. June 16, 1939, No. 17677. Convention date, June 16, 1938. [Class 76] [Also in Group IV] Skins are tanned to form white leather by treatment with acidic polymers of α-unsaturated aliphatic carboxylic acids, including inter-polymers of such acids with other polymerizable substances. Tanning is preferably carried out at room temperature by drumming the skins with aqueous solutions of the polymers having a pH of 4.8 to 6.4. After penetration of the solution into the skins, the rate of tanning is accelerated by lowering the pH to 3.4 to 4.2 by the addition of lactic, hydrochloric, sulphuric, acetic, phosphoric, sulphamic, or formic acid. The agents may be used in conjunction with vegetable or chrome tanning agents, aluminium sulphate, or synthetic agents containing sulphonic groups ; white pigments may be added to the tanning bath. Examples describe the tanning of goatskins and calfskins using polyacrylic acid, polymethacrylic acid, and interpolymers of acrylic acid :and methacrylic acid, maleic anhydride and styrene, methacrylic acid and styrene, and methacrylic acid and methyl methacrylate. Other suitable agents are polymerized ethyl acrylic acid and interpolymers of acrylic acid and styrene; maleic anhydride, methacrylic acid and styrene; and methacrylic acid with maleic anhydride, diethyl fumarate, butadiene, vinyl acetate, dichlorethylene, indene, vinyl chloride, vinyl chloracetate, or methacrylamide. The polymers may be prepared from the monomers by heating in the presence of benzoyl peroxide, by heating in toluene solution (which may contain carbon tetrachloride) under reflux or in an autoclave, either with or without benzoyl peroxide, by adding to hot water which may contain methylated starch, or by exposure to ultra-violet light: The acidic polymers may also be prepared by the partial or complete hydrolysis of polymers or interpolymers of derivatives of the acids, e.g., esters, amides, or nitriles; for example the methyl methacrylate polymer prepared according to Specification 427,494, [Group IV], may be dissolved in benzene and hydrolysed with alcoholic potash solution.
