Abstract

1465453 Tanning leather SCHILL & SEILACHER 7 May 1975 [13 May 1974] 19089/75 Heading C6C Leather is tanned by using as a tanning agent a tanning-active dispersion of a polymer emulsion, from an acrylic monomer, in an aqueous solution of an aldehyde e.g. glutaric aldehyde. The tanning- active dispersion may be used prior to, during or subsequent to chrome tanning or combination tanning i.e. synthetic or vegetable tanning or it may be used alone in association with a pickling treatment. The polymer may be a copolymer obtained by emulsion polymerization, in the presence of anionic or non-ionic emulsifiers, of the monomers ethyl acrylate and methacrylic acid, ethyl acrylate being the predominant monomer. The dispersion of aldehyde solution and polymer emulsion may be obtained by mixing the two components and, 1, allowing the mixture to stand at ambient temperature or, 2, heating the mixture to 30 to 38‹C.
