Abstract

530,342. Roller bearings. RIBBESFORD CO., Ltd., and ONIONS. J. H. June 21, 1939, No. 18118. [Class 12 (i)] A roller bearing particularly suitable for use in the elbow joints of aircraft shock absorber linkages consists of a number of rollers formed by helically wound wire coils mounted in a tubular race member having means at its ends for retaining the rollers in position. Fig. 1 shows a tubular member 10 mounted on a shaft 12 and formed with curved ends 17 engaging the reduced ends 16 of the wire coil rollers 11. The coils are preferably wound alternately clockwise and anti-clockwise and may be either arranged contiguously or spaced by a cage. The outer surfaces of the rollers are ground to form substantially continuous cylindrical surfaces after being hardened and tempered. The member 10 may alternatively be made of a diameter to fit the outer bearing member 13 and have inwardly turned ends to engage the ends of the rollers. Fig. 4 shows rollers composed of helically wound square-sectioned wire 21 fitted at their ends with pins 20 engaging annular grooves 19 in the flanged ends of the tubular member 10. The outer race is formed by a tubular member 22 having inwardly directed flanges 23 engaging the ends of the rollers. The member 22 is split obliquely at 24 to facilitate assembly. In another construction which may be packed with grease the rollers are enclosed between inner and outer races having abutting edges.
