[Classes 17 (i) and 17 (ii)] Relates to improvements in the method of making stiffeners wherein a locally delivered mass of impregnant is, by pressure, spread and caused to penetrate into a layer of absorbent sheet material from one side thereof, such as described in Specifications 469,014 and 487,159. According to the invention, a blank of backstiffened swansdown (i.e. one which has one surface loaded with china clay and the other surface raised or fleeced) is placed on a die, such as described in Specification 469,014, with the raised surface uppermost, a mass of impregnant is locally delivered thereon and covered with a blank of greaseproof paper. Pressure is then applied through a pressure plate, as described in the Specification referred to. The resultant stiffener is stored in a closed container until required, when the greaseproof paper is stripped off. Instead of a back-stiffened swansdown, unloaded swansdown with the lower side treated with a celluloid derivative solution, rubber solution, gelatine solution or shellac solution may be used. In another method, two blanks of swansdown, either back-loaded or back-treated with solution, are arranged in the die, impregnant being locally applied between them. The product may be stored until required, and then separated to form two stifteners. Alternatively, untreated swansdown blanks may be used, with blanks of filter paper at the bottom and top of the opposed swansdown blanks between which the impregnant is delivered. To guard against the escape of impregnant between the layers the die block described in Specification 487,159 is replaced by a die device comprising a block 1 having an upstanding central portion 3 formed with a marginally-bevelled die cavity 5 and fitting snugly in an aperture in a plate 7. This plate is urged upwards to a limited amount by springs 11 surrounding three screws 9. Four plungers 15 urged upwards by weak springs 17 serve as positioning means for the blank.
