Abstract

696,225. Toe stiffeners for shoes. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd., HILL, M. G., and WILKINS, R. J. Sept. 12, 1951 [Sept. 13, 1950], No. 22471/50. Class 17 (ii). Relates to stiffeners made as described in Specification 530,322 in press apparatus such as that described in Specification 487,159, by which a mass of impregnant dissolved in a volatile organic solvent is deposited between the faces of two superposed blanks of absorbent sheet material such as cotton swansdown cloth, and is spread and caused to penetrate into the blanks, which are then stored until required for use in air-tight containers, when they are removed and separated. Backing material prevents the impregnant from emerging on the opposite faces of the blanks. According to the invention, some of the original stiffness of the blank is lost on spreading and penetration of the impregnant, owing to the solvent action of the impregnant at least on part of the backing material. This latter may comprise two coatings, the first of which can be softened by the solvent for the impregnant while the second and outer coating is substantially impermeable to the impregnant. The first coating may be gum, natural or synthetic resin, a cellulose derivative, e.g. celluloid, or a rubber in an organic solvent or as an aqueous emulsion or suspension and the second coating may be china clay or film of starch.
