[Class 12 (iii)] An installation for lubricating the wheel flanges of rail vehicles and/or the guiding face of the rails comprises an oil supply pump continually operated while the vehicle is in motion and a valve in the supply system adapted through the relative angular displacement of the vehicle and a bogie therebeneath when the vehicle is rounding a curve to divert automatically the oil supply to lubricators adjacent the outer wheel flanges and rail but to bye-pass the oil back to the reservoir when the vehicle is on a straight track. As shown rotation of a carriage bogie 3 relative to the carriage 5 when rounding a curve produces through linkage 58, 60, 56 displacement of a sliding valve 30 which, operating on a straight track to bye-pass the oil supply from a pump 13 through conduits 33, 34 leading back to the oil reservoir, in a displaced position on a curved track shuts off the oil from all outlets except that, 35 or 36, leading to the outer wheel flange lubricator 49 or 50. The pump 13 is driven through gearing 7 and 8 by a shaft 6 driven from the carriage wheels, cam surfaces 18, 19 of an oblique groove 16 in the gear wheel 8 hub contacting with a projection 20 of adjustable effective breadth reciprocating the piston, which has a slot 27 therein to connect the cylinder chamber 28 alternately with (i) during a suction stroke, an inlet conduit 25 leading to the oil reservoir and (ii) during a pressure stroke, with an outlet port 26 leading to the valve 30. The linkage arm is rendered extensible by a spring device 63 to provide for turning of the bogie beyond the stroke limit of the valve 30. Preferably the lubricators 49, 50 are fitted with valves opening only at a definite pressure and there is a slight throttling of the oil supply in the valve at the bye-pass outlets even in a central position of the valve.
