Abstract

232,349. Ironside, E. A. Jan. 24, 1924. Amtomatic gear. - Means for controlling hydraulic, steam and pneumatic engines comprises a piston valve 4, Fig. 2, inserted in the supply pipes leading to a pair of engines B, each of which drives a pump 9 or 10 circulating liquid to and from a tank 11, the circuit being provided with a throttling valve 14 or 15 and being connected to one end of the valve cylinder, so that if one engine races the valve is actuated to cut down the supply to that engine. The piston valve may be replaced by a rotary valve the spindle of which has a flap acted on oppositely by the liquid from the pumps 9, 10. The main supply pipe 1 may be fitted with a valve actuated by the pressure of the supply and adapted to allow some fluid to pass to the exhaust when a predetermined pressure is reached. The piston valve 4 may be rendered inoperative by fully opening a valve 17 in a pipe 16, or a valve 22, Fig. 3, in a pipe 21 connecting the supply pipes.
