Abstract

529,951. Ships' berths. CASPARY, E. June 13, 1939, No. 17256. [Class 52 (ii)] A roll-up ships' berth comprises a frame adapted for removable attachment to suspension means and having transverse members 7 foldable against longitudinal members 6 to enable the berth, bedding &c. to be rolled up with the frame after removal of the frame from the suspension means. As shown in Fig. 1 the superposed berths are slung from four vertical supporting ropes 1 which may be suspended between decks by hooks 2 or may hang free, and the longitudinal and transverse rods 6, 7 have sockets which can be slipped over pegs on suspension fittings 4 fixed to the ropes. The flexible bottom 8 of each berth is extended at the sides and ends to form curtains 9, 11 supported by ropes 10, 12, engaging pegs on suspension fittings 5. The side curtains 9 are held at their centres by straps 13, and the ropes 10 are sufficiently long to contact with the tubes 6 and are stretched by a spring connected between two points in the rope, to facilitate entering and leaving the berth. Figs. 5 and 6 show a modification in which the berth is slung between ropes 29 and supports 28, 31 fixed to the side 21 of the ship, the ropes 29 carrying rigid members 33 with pins for the outer longitudinal member 6 and the ropes 10, 12, the inner ends of the ropes 12 being secured to pins on the brackets 31. When detached from the members 33 and rolled up as shown in Fig. 5, the outer rod 6 is attached to the brackets 31 and the rolled berth forms a head-rest above the turned-up mattress 23 of the berth below. The transverse rods 7 have pins taking in holes in the longitudinal rods 6 and are further supported by brackets 41 fixed to the rods 6. The lower berth rests upon a locker 18 and is surrounded by a collapsible rail 24. Detachable inclined struts may be arranged between the rod 6 and the upper ends of the members 33.
