529,690. Phenol-aldehyde condensation products. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. June 6, 1939, No. 16613. Convention date, June 8, 1938. [Class 2 (iii)] Resinous condensation products are prepared by condensing, in the presence of an acid catalyst, formaldehyde and mixture of a phenol and an oily body obtained from the destructive distillates of wood, preferably a hard wood. The product will react with methylene containing agents to yield hardenable condensates. In examples (1) a mixture of " wood oil," crude phenol and aqueous formaldehyde is condensed in the presence of sulphuric acid, partially dehydrated, the acid neutralized with calcium hydroxide and the dehydration completed : moulded articles may be prepared from a composition comprising the product, hexamethylenetetramine, calcium hydroxide, calcium stearate and wood flour with or without the addition of a dye such as nigrosine and talc ; (3) a mixture of " wood oil," crude phenol, crude cresol, and aqueous formaldehyde is condensed in the presence of sulphuric acid, partially dehydrated, the acid neutralized with calcium hydroxide and the dehydration completed.
