Abstract

529,682. Locating sounds. TEPAS KOMANDITNI SPOLECNOST HARLAS A SPOL V PRAZE, and SCHEINER, A. June 6, 1939, No. 16587. [Class 118 (ii)] Relates to a method of adjusting a sound locator in order to ensure that the binaural point is symmetrical in the operator's head when the device is directed correctly. According to the invention, sounds of identical intensity and phase are produced within the receivers, and the position of the earphones is adjusted, relatively to the receivers until the binaural point is symmetrical. The sound receivers 1, 2 are connected to the earphones 5, 6 by means of conduits 3, 4 to which the earphones are connected telescopically. The earphones are joined by a stirrup 12 which can be displaced towards either receiver and is provided with a pointer moving over a scale 15. A sound reproducer 9 is mounted in each receiver, and is connected to an oscillating generator 11 and adjusted so that both reproducers emit sounds identical in phase and intensity. During adjustment of the device, the operator moves the earphones towards one or other of the receivers until the sound appears to be symmetrical in his head, and the indication of the pointer 16 can then be used for subsequent settings of the earphones.
