Abstract

521,928. Locating sounds. SOC. ANON. OFFICINE GALILEO. Nov. 28, 1938, Nos. 34628 and 34629. Convention dates, Dec. 15, 1937, and July 18, 1938. [Class 118 (ii)] In an apparatus for training pupils in binaural sound detection, a loud-speaker c is mounted in a conduit a connecting with the pupil's, earpieces r and is movable along the slide by the instructor rotating the hand-wheel n<SP>1</SP> which rotates the differential g, the pupil returning the loud-speaker to its central position by the handwheel h. Extraneous noises are fed into the conduit by loud-speakers o, p. The loudspeakers may be operated by any kind of sound record. In the arrangement shown, the supposed course of an aircraft is plotted on a chart s carried by a motor-driven drum, and the instructor controls the position of the loudspeaker so that pointer v follows the course. The result of the'pupil's control is indicated by pointer p which should be maintained central. As an alternative to the chart, suitable cams may be provided to give a desired course movement to the loud-speaker. Variation in sound intensity to simulate distance is obtained by rheostat x and irregular variation may be provided by other rheostats, or in the case of a sound film record, a shutter of variable transparency may be used. A counter may be used to record the number of errors made by the pupil.
