Abstract
529,635. Preventing fires. BOOTHBY, F. L. M. May 23, 1939, No. 16927/38. [Class 47 (ii)] Relates to means for maintaining an inert atmosphere above the fuel in tanks, and consists in the provision of a jacket 22 around, and communicating with the air space in, the tank 10. A pipe 29 from the jacket is provided with a non-return valve 30 and a branch 31 to a chamber 32 containing solid carbon-dioxide and a heater 33. The latter is in circuit with a battery 34 and contacts 27 controlled by a bellows 24. The latter is connected to the jacket 22 by a pipe 23, and is urged to collapse by a spring 28. If pressure falls in the jacket, owing, for example, to removal of fuel by the line 17, the heater 33 is switched on and inert gas is supplied to the jacket. Preferably, a super-normal pressure is maintained in the jacket. Leakage or condensation products may be removed by the valve 30. The chamber 32 may, alternatively, be arranged in heat-exchange relationship with the engine using the fuel.
