Abstract

579,841. Preventing fires. EGERTON, A. C. G., and BURGOYNE, J. H. March 8, 1940, No. 4368. [Class 47 (ii)] [Also in Group XXVII] In a device for storing liquefied combustible gases or supplying them to an internal-combustion engine or other apparatus, means are provided for igniting at a jet any gas vaporizing from the tank when the engine &c. is not working. Liquefied methane or other hydrocarbon gas is contained at atmospheric pressure in a vacuum jacketed tank 15, and is normally conveyed by a pipe 17 to a vaporizer 18 heated by the exhaust pipe 23, on to which the liquid falls, the gas passing by a pipe 27 to the carburetter 28. A cock 34 is provided for cutting off the supply of gas to the engine 11, any gas which then escapes through the pipe 27 being conveyed to a jet 38 by a pipe 36 having a cock 37 actuated with the cock 34. Gas escaping at 38 is ignited by a platinum electric heater 39 supplied by current from a battery 46 and switch 44, 45 also actuated with the cocks 34, 37. The igniter 39 and jet 38 are enclosed in a gauze cage 41 together with a bimetallic switch 40 which cuts off the current when the burning gas has raised the temperature of the enclosure sufficiently. A petrol carburetter 29 may also be provided, being supplied from pipes 30, 31 with a cock 35 actuated with the cock 34, so that the gas is cut off when petrol is being used. An ignition switch 49 controlling the ignition coil 50 may be operated with the switch 44. The cocks and switches are connected to an indicator 54 showing whether gas or petrol or neither is being supplied. The tank 15 may be as described in Specification 579,840, [Group XXVIII], and may supply the liquefied gas to the vaporizer through a diaphragm-actuated valve 22 as described in Specification 579,842, [Group XXVII]. The escaping gas may be burnt bv surface combustion at a catalytic surface.
