Abstract
529,514. Heel breasting-machines. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd., RICKS, F., and BARKER, W. A. May 19, 1939, No. 14906. [Class 17 (i)] The heel is positioned with the aid of gauges , and clamped to a holder which is then swung into operative position beneath the knife. Power operated means for actuating the knife cannot be engaged except when the heel is in operative position. On return to the loading position remote from the path of the knife the heel is ejected and blasts of air produced for the removal of chips from the machine. The knife has a movable guard. The holder for the heel H is pivoted at 17 and moved by a handle 23 between loading and breasting positions. The sides of the heel are engaged by gauges 37 which may be separated or brought together by a hand-operated knob 51. The rear of the heel is positioned by a gauge 27, adjustable by a knob 31. The heel breast is positioned by fingers 45, geared together, held in adjusted position by the friction of a leaf spring, and carried by a lever 47. When positioned, the heel is held by a clamp 53 on a lever depressed by a link 61 threaded into a pin 63 carried by a pair of plates 65 pivoted at 67 and urged clockwise in Fig. 4 by a lever 73 pivoted to the handle 23. A spring 77 releases the heel when allowed. To prevent the clutch being engaged to depress the knife 25 unless the heel is in operative position, the work support carries a curved member 85 normally preventing an axially slidable rod 83 from moving to the left in Fig. 2 under the pull of a spring 87. This rod is adjustably pivoted to a lever 97 formed with an extension 101 normally preventing a lever 105 being depressed, this lever being that depressed by treadle to engage the clutch.. The lever 97 carries a latch 129 co-operating with a latch 115 which first frees and then lifts the lever 105. A link 141 moves with the rod 83 to produce blasts of air by a spring actuated piston from a cylinder 139 as the heel is swung back to work changing position, nozzles 162, 164 directing the blast. A curved work ejector 163 is carried by a lever 49, carried by the lever 47 carrying the fingers 45, this lever being swung by a pawl 175 carried by the heel holder and engaging a surface 173 to actuate the ejector and then sliding off the same to allow it to be returned by a spring. A pivoted guard 177 shields the knife. Arc shaped guides 13 allow the work support to be adjusted about a virtual axis to adjust the angle of the breasting cut. The support is clamped in adjusted position by a handle 15. Specification 17260/09, [Class 17 (i)] is referred to.
