529,220. Electric motors. BLACK & DECKER MANUFACTURING CO. May 25,1939, No. 15530. Convention date, March 10, 1938. [Class 35] In a portable rotary tool adapted for use as a drill, tapper, screw driver, or wrench the motor is arranged in a casing 1 with a depending grip 2 provided with a removable cover 3 in which is pivote'd a lever 40 fitted with a pin 45 for operating the switch 47. A shackle 49 may be pushed over the end of the lever to hold the switch closed. Spare brushes 16 for the motor are housed in the grip being supported by springs 62 engaging a screw plug 63. The casing 1 is provided with ventilating openings 25, 26, the latter being fitted with screens 27. The sides 55 of the casing are flattened and grooved near the rear end so as to locate the fingers and thumb when the casing is held. The motor spindle carries a fan 9 and a pinion 16 meshing with a pinion 17 on a spindle 11 carrying a chuck 12 and arranged in a gear casing 10 attached to the casing 1. The gear casing is provided with an externally screwed neck 19 housing the bearing 18 and closed at its outer end by a screw cap 20 which assists in holding the bearing in position. The cap may be removed to allow an angle drilling attachment to be mounted on the gear casing or to enable'the motor to be used for driving a flexible shaft or a reciprocating tool head.
