Abstract

529,128. Magnesium carbonate. PLANT RUBBER & ASBESTOS WORKS. May 22, 1939, No. 15211. Convention date, June 9, 1938. [Class 1 (iii)] [Also in Group V] A slurry of magnesium carbonate crystals having self-setting properties and useful for forming sound and heat insulating materials is formed by precipitating a solution of a magnesium salt, such as seawater bittern with an alkali metal or other carbonate. The reaction is carried out in concentrated solution with agitation and at temperatures up to 120‹ F. to obtain fine needle-like crystals. Caustic soda, magnesia, lime &c. may be added to decompose magnesium bicarbonate. The slurry is filtered, washed and placed in moulds which may be heated to 140-195‹ F. preferably by live steam. After setting the blocks are removed from the moulds and dried. Reinforcing materials such as asbestos fibres, vermiculite or diatomaceous earth may be mixed with the slurry.
