Abstract

529,126. Magnesium carbonate. JACKSON, L. MELLERSH-. (Plant Rubber & Asbestos Works). May 22, 1939, No. 15209. [Class 1 (iii)] [Also in Group V] The setting of a slurry of fine needle-like crystals of magnesium carbonate obtained as described in Specifications 529,127 and 529,128, or by treating with carbon dioxide a suspension of magnesium hydroxide, is effected in presence of an alkali such as alkali metal hydroxide, magnesium oxide, borax or lime which absorbs carbon dioxide which may be liberated during the setting. The setting is effected in moulds which may be heated preferably by live steam to 130-170‹ F. The blocks removed from the moulds are dried at 155-395‹ F. Reinforcing materials such as asbestos fibre, vermiculite, diatomaceous earth may be mixed with the slurry.
