Abstract
528,744. Distributing fuel on and removing ashes &c. from furnace grates. ESKE, F. W. April 6, 1939, No. 10852. [Class 51 (i)] A bar 4 located transversely and adjacent to the upper surface of a furnace grate 1 is moved backwards and forwards from one end of the grate to the other for distributing fuel fed from a hopper 28 and for discharging ash into a hopper 29 at the rear of the grate. Any ash falling through the grate bars is blown towards the rear of the ashpit by a current of air into a receptacle 32. The bar 4 is tilted slowly as it moves towards the rear of the grate from an almost vertical position at the front of the grate to a position parallel with the grate surface at the rear. The bar is provided at its ends on a level with its lower edge with extensions 6 which pass through slots 7 in the side walls and carry rollers 9 running in guide rails 10. To the extensions 6 are also fixed rods 12 provided at their upper ends with rollers 14 moving in guide rails 15, and links 17, 19, the latter being connected. to an endless rope or chain 20 driven by an electric motor. The front ends of the guide rails 10, 15 are connected by semicircular rails and the guide rails converge towards the rear of the grate where they unite. As the bar is moved by the rope or chain 20 towards the rear the rollers moving in the upper and lower guide rails cause the bar to tilt gradually to the horizontal position. The motor driving the rope or chain 20 is then reversed and the bar travels towards the front of the furnace in a horizontal position with both sets of rollers in the lower track until it reaches the semicircular guide rails at the front when the bar is again tilted into the position shown at 4a. The links 19 on one side of the grate are provided with projections 37 which operate reversing switches 39 at the front and rear of the grate. The slots 7 in the side walls are sealed by flexible strips or shutters secured to the extensions 6 adapted to move with the blade 4 and to wind upon and unwind from spring loaded spindles in casings 38.
