Abstract

528,720. Stapling. OBSTFELD, L., and OBSTFELD, A. May 13, 1939, No. 14349. Convention date, May 24, 1938. [Class 89 (iii)] A pliers-type stapling tool comprises interfitting U-shaped handles 12, 14 of sheet metal which are respectively pivoted to an enclosed stapling arm 16 at 28 and 26, the handle 12 carrying an anvil 24. The handle 14 carries a driver-actuating arm 106. The front end of the handle 12 is open, and is closed by the forward portion 22 of the stapling arm, which is a close fit therein. The handles are spread from the stapling arm by springs 30, 34, the spring 30 being the weaker, so that the stapling arm tilts towards the anvil before the arm 106 is actuated to drive a staple. The spring 34 acts also to lock the pivot pin 28 in place. The spring 30 is held against endwise movement by a lug 29 on a spacing strip 32 of the stapling arm, and it is curved at 54 to hold the hooked end 60 of the pusher rod 56 removably engaged in a hole in the strip 32. The stapling arm comprises side plates 66 which are connected by a staplesupporting core 36, Fig. 5, and the strip 32, the staples being guided by the core and strip. The plates 66 are extended upwardly at their forward ends, Fig. 9, and closed by plates 76, 90 which define between them a passage way for a driver 84. The plate 76 has a slot 86 for the passage of the staples, and both plates are slotted to accommodate the tip 82 of the driver-actuating arm 106, which engages a slot 88 in the driver. The plates are held in place by tongues 74 and slots 78, 96 and by a U-shaped member 22 which has holes 102 to engage lugs 104 on the plates 66. The member 22 is of spring metal, and its front wall 98 is curved inwardly so as to engage the plate 90 and hold it firmly in place, but allowing freedom to yield if a deformed staple enters the driver passageway. A full-stroke mechanism comprises a dog 114 which can pivot and slide on the pivot pin 26 under action of a spring 126, and a cam member 116, Fig. 10, carried by the stapling arm. The dog 114 has lugs 120, 124 co-operating with the arm 106 in such a manner that the dog and arm are held from upward movement by a shoulder 132 if the driver makes an incomplete stroke, whereas the dog is moved rearwardly by a cam 134 and locked by a lug 122 if a full stroke is made. The staple pusher 146 is dimensioned so that it can eject the last staple into, but cannot itself enter, the driver passageway. It comprises ears 150, 152 slidable on the rod 56, which is removably hooked to the strip 32. The rod is flattened at its forward end 156 for co-operation with a non-circular hole in the ear 152, so that the pusher cannot rotate on the rod when the latter is removed from the machine to permit reloading. Reloading is facilitated by a curved guide 162 at the rear end of the core 36. The anvil 24 is carried by side arms 176 which are welded to the handle 12, and may comprise a fixed plate with clenching recesses, or an adjustable plate 178, as shown, movable frictionally on the bridge 174 of the arms 176 and provided with alternative clinching and spreading recesses. The plate 178 also comprises a slot 194 which can be brought into line with the driver for the ejection of a jammed staple. Alternatively, the anvil may be slidable on the handle 12 for movement to a position in which a jammed staple can be ejected in rear of it. The handle 12 and the stapling arm are provided with arrows 216, 218, Fig. 14, to indicate the position at which a staple will be driven. A blade 220 and/or 222 for extracting staples is arranged at one or each end of the handle 12.
