[Class 41] A bath for the electrodeposition of nickel contains in addition to a nickel salt, preferably the chloride, sulphate or borate, a soluble aminopolyaryl methane compound such as triphenyl methane dyestuffs, e.g. magenta, malachite green, methyl violet, gentian violet, crystal violet, auramine 0, 2.2<1>, 4.4<1>-tetramino-5.5<1> dimethyl diphenyl methane sulphate or the products produced by reducing these materials with nickel and hydrochloric acid, and an aromatic sulphonate, sulphonamide or sulphimide such as naphthalene mono-, di- and trisulphonates, o-benzoic sulphimide, benzene sulphonamide, benzene sulphohydroxamic acid or o- or p-toluene sulphonamide. The bath may also include a sulphate of a normal primary aliphatic alcohol having at least six carbon atoms, such as sodium lauryl sulphate.
