528,401. Gas holders. ASHMORE, BENSON, PEASE & CO., Ltd., and HUNTER, C. F. May 5, 1939, No. 13522. [Class 54] In constructing a telescopic gas holder from welded metal plates the seams on either the outside or the inside of the lifts are first welded and the holder is then inflated to allow welding on the other side of the lifts to be effected. Fig. 7 shows a gas holder in which the outer lift is first built by welding together a ring element 2, a series of plates 1, 4, 6 and a ring 8 on their inner surfaces. The inner lift is then built by welding together a ring element 22, plates 9, 11, 21 and a roof 12 on their inner surfaces. The gas holder is then inflated gradually and the seams are successively welded on the outer surface of the lifts by operators on the ring 8 or the top of the holder tank 19. When a gas holder is built from plates welded at first at the outer edges the operators are supported on a raft floating inside the holder to weld the inner edges of the plates as the holder is inflated.
