Abstract
528,308. Light-weight felted fibrous boards. JACKSON, L. MELLERISH-. (Bakelite Building Products Co., Inc.). April 21, 1939, No. 5853/40. Divided out of 527,857, [Group V]. [Class 96] [Also in Group III] An emulsion is prepared by high speed agitation of a water repellent substance substantially solid at atmospheric temperature with at least 80 per cent. of an aqueous soap solution having a concentration of less than 12.5 per cent. sufficiently rigorously to produce particles in the disperse phase having an average size of 2-25 microns which on dilution of the primary emulsion are transformed into mobile groups of particles having adherent properties. In examples: (1) paraffin wax is dispersed in water by means of sodium stearate in a 5 gallon mixer having a half-inch circular blade with a corrugated facing ; (2) melted rosin containing some turpentine is run into a solution of potassium stearate and dispersed by means of high speed agitation ; (3) chlorinated naphthalene, Chinese wax and a mixture of Egyptian asphalt and paraffin wax are dispersed by means of sodium stearate. Any natural or synthetic resin, estergum or wax may be used as the water repellent substance. Carnauba wax, shellac and beeswax are mentioned and solvents such as benzine, toluene, alcohol or petroleum may be used when necessary, but the latter should be substantially removed before the completion of the formation of the secondary emulsion by dilution. By the addition of small quantities of the secondary emulsions to the composite materials such as are described in Specification 527,857, [Group V], the moisture absorption properties of the latter are reduced. The following examples of this application of the emulsions are given:-(6) an emulsion prepared as in example 1 is added to a non-settling pulp of asbestos and water ; Portland cement is then incorporated and the mixture run upon a screen, dewatered and subjected to pressure. When cured and dried the resulting moulded product is suitable as a lightweight, fireproof, wall panel material: (7) a product, of "honeycombed structure" is obtained using "news-stock" in place of the asbestos in the previous example.
