Abstract

Gypsum products, such as wallboards, having a cellular structure, may be made by blending a slurry formed from calcium sulphate hemihydrate and water with a saponified rosinate and a liquid first stage resinous condensation product of formaldehyde with xylenols, phenol, or cresols or any mixture thereof, agitating the blend to product a stable foamed-up mass and drying the mass so formed. Preferably the weight ratio of the saponified rosin to synthetic resin is from 5 : 1 to 1 : 5, and the solids content of the liquid resin is from 40 to 80 per cent by weight. In the example, a "foaming-up" solution, consisting of a water-diluted blend of a liquid cresol (i.e. a mixture of m- and p-cresols)-formaldehyde resin and saponified rosin was run continuously and simultaneously with an aqueous slurry of plaster of Paris into a mixing machine in which the whole mixture was violently agitated whilst passing through, and from which a material having a cellular structure emerged. This material was fed continuously between strong paper sheets or liners and the paper coated strip or sheet cut into lengths which were then moved continuously through a drying oven.ALSO:Gypsum products, such as wall boards, having a cellular structure, may be made by blending a slurry formed from calcium sulphate hemihydrate and water with a saponified rosinate and a liquid first stage resinous condensation product of formaldehyde with xylenols, phenol or cresols or any mixture thereof, agitating the blend to produce a stable foamed up mass and drying the mass so formed. Preferably the weight rates of the saponified rosin to synthetic resin is from 5 : 1 to 1 : 5, and the solids content of the liquid resin is from 40 to 80 per cent by weight. In the example, a 'foaming-up' solution, consisting of a water-diluted blend of a liquid cresol (i.e., a mixture of m- and p-cresols)-formaldehyde resin and saponified rosin, was run continuously and simultaneously with an aqueous slurry of plaster of Paris into a mixing machine in which the whole mixture was violently agitated whilst passing through, and from which a material having a cellular structure emerged.
