Abstract

528,173. Screw-and-nut gearing. BROMILOW & EDWARDS, Ltd., and SWIFT, H. W. Oct. 26, 1939. No. 35505. [Class 80 (iii)] In a screw-and-nut gearing, e.g., for vehicle steering gear, wherein balls 8 are employed between the threads of the screw 1 and the nut 5, and a return conduit 10 for the balls is provided, the nut 5, according to the invention, is furnished with end caps or collars 11, 12 providing tangential ports for the balls and having unions 23, 25 for the conduit, the end collars being removably secured to the nut proper. The collars are rebated, and flanged at 13, 14 for securing by bolts 15, 16. The end collars are each furnished with a deflector 26, Fig. 2, which projects tangentially into the helical channel of the thread. Movement of the nut in each direction is limited by shoulders 27, 28. Lubricant may be supplied to the screw-threads and balls through a lubricator 29 on the nut which may have the usual lateral spigots 30, 31 for connection through a yoke to the steering link. In modifications, (1) two rows of balls are employed between consecutive threads of the screw and nut and the opposed bearing surfaces are in a direction inclined to the screw axis and, (2) the balls are located in grooves in surfaces of the threads perpendicular to the screw axis.
