Abstract

527,489. Supplying pulp to paper-making machines. THORSEN, K. A. Jan. 9, 1939, No. 736. [Class 96] Pulp under pressure leaving the spout 6 of a flow box of a paper-making machine is deflected at 15 before reaching the wire-cloth 14, downward flow tending to make the fibres parallel, paper thus made being suitable, e.g. for newsprint, whilst as in alternative embodiments, deflection upwardly slows up the pulp stream . and orients the fibres in all directions. Pulp from a static head 2 or pumped through a flexible pipe 4 passes a perforated flow-evener cylinder 5 to the outlet spout 6 the lower lip 8 of which is adjustable generally at 9 and locally across the machine at 13. Water is supplied at 16 to reduce friction between the fibres of the pulp and the deflection plate 15 ; and any airbubbles formed at the spout 6 are eliminated by centrifugal action. In other alternative forms, two deflection plates are used ; the position of the spout 6 is adjustable, e.g., using swiveljointed pipes ; baffle plates are used in advance of, or instead of, the flow-evener roll 5 ; and according to the Provisional Specification the pulp deflection plate 15 is substituted by a sheet of rubber &c. having one end rolled about a drum and having its edges resting on curved supports which are replaceable by others of different curvature. The width of paper being made is varied by an adjustable frame &c. at each side of the wire, pulp flowing outside such frames being returned for re-use.
