[Class 51 (ii)] A portable apparatus for feeding fuel to the firing holes of continuous kilns has a hopper 12 communicating witha channelled upper portion 10 of a cylindrical shoot 11 in which is arranged a rotary shaft 13 provided with agitating and feeding elements 17, 17<SP>1</SP> and driven by pawl and ratchet and bevel gearing at its upper end. The ratchet gear may comprise one pawl or two pawls 25<SP>1</SP>, 25", as shown, mounted on an arm 24 which is oscillated through a system of links and levers from an eccentric which may actuate the shafts 13 of one or more hoppers and shoots. The agitating members 17 consist of helical vanes on spaced bosses 18 and are arranged in staggered relation. The feeding members 17<SP>1</SP> are arranged to provide a continuous helical vane on bosses 18 which are in contact. Alternatively, the shaft may be provided with a continuous helical worm. The lower end of the shaft 13 is supported in a disc 16, which is provided with discharge apertures 16'. The disc 16 is removable and replaceable by discs having apertures selected according to the size of the fuel being used. Instead of employing removable discs the apertures in the discs may be controlled by a shutter. The lower end of the shoot engages with a recess provided in a removable cover plate 31 having an observation aperture 33 and a projection 11<SP>1</SP> on the shoot bears against the top of the cover plate. The shoot is also supported in position over the firing hole by legs 30. Instead of using the cover plate 31, the lower end of the shoot may be provided with a flange for supporting it over the firing opening.
