Abstract
526,552. Oil seals. CHICAGO RAWHIDE MANUFACTURING CO. March 20, 1939, No. 8816. Convention date, March 23, 1938. [Class 122 (v)] An oil seal of the type comprising a sleeve packing 13 held in a casing 10 is made by contracting or expanding one edge of an apertured disc to form a sleeve and inserting said edge in a channel or between clamping elements in the casing. A washer 18 may be pressed axially between a conical casing 16, Fig. 6, and a central member 15 having a greater diameter than the bore of the washer, by a movable member 19 which turns the outer periphery of the washer downwardly and engages it in the channel of the casing 10. In an alternative method, Fig. 16, after engagement of the packing and casing, continued pressure on the movable member 33 moves the central member downwardly and causes dies 32 to move outwardly on a conical member 37 to deform the wall of the channel into engagement with the packing. In a further method, Fig. 2], the sleeve 46 is deformed on a mandrel and clamped between the casing 47 and a ring 49 carried magnetically by the movable die 50 during the deforming operation. External seals may be made in the same way, the small diameter end of the packing sleeve being inserted in the casing in this case. The sleeve packing 11', Fig. 1 is pressed by spring 12 on a radial shoulder on a shaft.
